Four Unusual Destinations for Your Next Sporting Adventure

The world is a playground, so the saying goes, but for those who practice outdoor sports, it’s a reality. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner, an adventure in the great outdoors will do wonders for your mental and physical health and will ensure you have a trip to remember,

When it comes to booking a sporting holiday, the destination can make or break your experience. If you choose the right spot, you will reap the benefits of so-called "green exercise" and get to enjoy some breathtaking views.

With so many places to choose from, however, it’s hard to know where to begin. Here are four unusual sporting destinations to inspire your next adventure.

Volcano Boarding in Leon, Nicaragua

Undoubtedly one of the more unusual extreme sports, volcano boarding attracts thrill-seekers in their masses, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. First, you will need to hike Leon’s 2,000 ft. volcano, known as Cerro Negro: this takes about an hour for the average person, and you will have to carry your board the whole way up.

Then, you run the risks of molten lava burns and the inhalation of poisonous gases as you board down the volcano. Even when you’re wearing the required safety gear, it’s still dangerous, hence why it’s such a popular extreme sport.

Cliff-diving at Rick’s Café, Jamaica

Rick’s café in Negril, Jamaica has stood since 1974. It is renowned not only for its view of the Caribbean sunset and tropical cocktails but also for the limestone cliff it sits on. Enthusiasts claim it’s one of the best spots in the world to practice cliff diving, due to its three separate diving spots — the tallest of which is 35 feet above the cove.

Scootering in The Basement in Adelaide, Australia

Adelaide is a well-known scootering hotspot, with The Basement located in the centre of the city. Scootering in a small space might seem counter-intuitive, but this indoor skatepark has several impressive ramps, steps and ledges, all of which are perfect for scooters and skateboards.

If you’re planning a scootering trip, it’s important to have the right gear before you go. Root Industries is a well-known Australian brand. They are best known for their AIR wheels, which are renowned for being incredibly lightweight and allowing the rider to do bigger, more extreme tricks.

Zorbing in Tarragona, Spain

Zorbing (also known as glove-riding, sphering or orbing) is the act of rolling downhill in a giant inflatable ball with the person harnessed inside. Located near Reus Airport in Tarragona, Golf Sant Antoni Mas is the most popular zorbing destination in Spain. Here, participants can even practice football or soccer zorbing. The location also offers other activities such as golf, biking, hiking, horse riding and swimming.

Zorbing is also popular here in the UK, where both families and businesses view the sport as a bonding or teambuilding activity.

No matter what your sporting preference, there is bound to be an unusual spot you’ve never visited in which to practice your skills. Sporting holidays can be both relaxing and enjoyable, and you may even meet other like-minded enthusiasts, so be sure to make space for them in your calendar.
